Onana or Fabrice Ondoa? Cameroon defenders indicate preferred choice to start in goal v Nigeria
Published: January 27, 2024
Nigeria will take on neighbors Cameroon in a blockbuster 2023 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clash at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday, 2100 hours kickoff.
The talking point before the game has to do with the goalkeeper manager Rigobert Song will pick to start in goal against the Super Eagles.
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana missed Cameroon's opener against Guinea, played the second game against Senegal and was dropped for the last group game versus The Gambia.
Nîmes Olympique goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa started two of the three games in the group stage and conceded three goals, same number as his cousin Onana.
Onana will be hoping to reclaim his place after being an unused substitute in the come-from-behind win against the Scorpions.
According to Cam Foot, Cameroon defenders have indicated that they are more comfortable when Ondoa is in goal, but Onana is regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the world.
Onana finished 23rd in the voting for the 2023 Ballon d'Or and was also in the running for the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world's best goalkeeper.
The 27-year-old conceded three goals the last time he faced Nigeria, in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clash at the
Alexandria Stadium.
