Just how bad is Onana? Key stat highlights Cameroon GK struggles at 2023 AFCON; Nwabali one of the best
Published: January 26, 2024
Indomitable Lions manager Rigobert Song has a big decision to make on Saturday, whether to reinstate Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana into the starting lineup or continue with Fabrice Ondoa.
Onana and his cousin Ondoa, both products of the Barcelona academy, have not covered themselves in glory at the ongoing tournament in Ivory Coast, having conceded three goals each.
Onana has played just once at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and set an anti-record during the 3-1 loss to defending champions Senegal - a performance that saw him dropped by Song for the crucial match against the Gambia.
According to the statisticians at Whoscored, Onana has the worst save success rate ( 0 percent) at the 2023 AFCON.
Ismaïla Sarr, Habib Diallo and Sadio Mane scored from Senegal's three shots on target in the win against the Indomitable Lions.
Babacar Niasse (12),Lawrence Mulenga (11), Jesús Owono (10), Aishi Manula (10) and Loydt Kazapua (10) are the top five goalkeepers with the most saves at the 2023 AFCON, while Nigeria's Stanley Nwabali ranks seventh with eight saves.
Only Mozambique's Ivane (100 percent) has a better save percentage than Nwabali (88.9 percent) so far at the AFCON.
An international goalkeeper since 2016, Onana has had a turbulent career with the Cameroon national team.
In 2017, he refused to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations won by Cameroon and was sent home from the World Cup in Qatar for disciplinary reasons.
