'They changed a lot of their players' - Iwobi admits Super Eagles win over Guinea-Bissau was difficult
Published: January 23, 2024
Alex Iwobi has reacted to Guinea-Bissau's approach in the game against the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations played yesterday evening.
Heading into the encounter, the Wild Dogs had very little chance of qualifying for the round of 16 having failed to secure any point in their opening two games.
However, they gave Nigeria a very good fight with the three-time African champions having to rely on an own goal from Opa Sanganté in the first half to secure the maximum points.
Iwobi said that the Wild Dogs approached the game with the belief that they could play well against the Super Eagles, and that made the game competitive.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone shortly after the game, Iwobi said: "Of course, it was difficult. They changed a lot of their players and I feel that they came with the mindset that they had players that are ready to express themselves.
"So, it was always going to be dangerous for us but the main thing is that we were able to get the three points and go through to the next round."
The Fulham midfielder has not had a good start to the tournament and was replaced by Joe Aribo in the starting lineup for the game.
Heading into the knock-out phase, José Peseiro will need the Hale End product to find his feet and help his side advance to the latter stages of the competition.
The Super Eagles will discover their next opponent later today after the conclusion of games in C where Gambia will take on Cameroon and Guinea facing Senegal.
