'There's no easy game' - Omeruo warns Super Eagles teammates a lot of big teams are struggling at AFCON
Published: January 22, 2024
Kenneth Omeruo was the player chosen to accompany manager Jose Peseiro to Sunday's pre-match press conference - an indication that the central defender is expected to be involved in some capacity in today's clash between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
When it comes to the Africa Cup of Nations, no player in the current squad has made more appearances than the Kasimpasa ace.
Omeruo registered his sixteenth career appearance at the AFCON after coming off the bench to replace Zaidu Sanusi in the last ten minutes of Nigeria's 1-0 win over Ivory Coast on January 18, 2024.
Although Guinea-Bissau have lost back-to-back matches at the ongoing AFCON, Omeruo has warned his Super Eagles teammates not to take the opponent lightly, adding that some of the big African teams have been struggling since the start of the tournament in Ivory Coast.
"I think it's going to be an interesting game because they are a team we are familiar with. Some people said it was going to be an easy game but there's no easy game now especially in this tournament.," Omeruo told reporters.
"A lot of the big teams are really struggling and that goes to show how improved the African teams are now. We are going to approach the game with all seriousness and try to win that game."
At the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, many Nigeria fans and pundits had backed the Super Eagles to go all the way and win the competition after finishing the group stage with a hundred percent record, only for the team coached by Augustine Eguavoen to crash out in the round of 16.
"If we go into the game thinking we're going to beat them there might be a surprise. We've been working hard, we've watched and analyzed the team.
"We know how they play, we know their strengths and we're working towards that in training," Omeruo added.
Kickoff at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan is at 1800 Nigerian time on Monday.
