Bayer Leverkusen confirm Boniface suffered a muscle-tendon injury, put a timeframe on striker's return
Published: January 09, 2024
German Bundesliga table toppers Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Victor Boniface suffered a significant injury at the Super Eagles training camp in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates during the national team's preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bayer Leverkusen stated that Boniface suffered a muscle-tendon injury in the right adductor area and the striker will undergo surgery in the coming days.
That was the result of the MRI examination conducted this afternoon in Cologne, Germany.
The injury means that Boniface will not be attending his first Africa Cup of Nations with the Nigerian national team.
OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi has been called in as a replacement for Boniface and will link up with the Nigeria squad, pending the approval of Confederation of African Football and concurrence of his Ligue 1 club.
According to the medical report from Bayer Leverkusen, a timeframe was put on Boniface's potential return to action, with the striker expected to make his injury comeback in early April if his rehabilitation goes according to plan.
The 23-year-old has been nominated for the German Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for December after winning the award from August-November since he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2023.
After playing 16 Bundesliga games for The Black and Reds, Boniface has already scored ten goals and registered seven assists.
