Uzoho will not report for Super Eagles duty on January 2 as Omonia, Nigerian Federation shake hands
Published: December 31, 2023
Omonia Nicosia's worst fears were confirmed on Friday, December 29 with the inclusion of Francis Uzoho in the Super Eagles' final 25-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations but whether he's chosen as the first choice goalkeeper is a different matter.
Omonia manager Sofronios Avgousti has a major goalkeeping crisis on his hands after Fabiano suffered an injury that will see him sidelined until January and Cyprus international Charalampos Kyriakidis is also in the treatment room.
A third goalkeeper in Constantinos Panagi has been loaned out to Ethnikos Achna for the entirety of the season, leaving Uzoho as the only senior goalkeeper at the disposal of Avgousti.
According to Cypriot sports radio station, Super Sport FM 104.0, Uzoho will not be linking up with the Super Eagles at their training camp in the United Arab Emirates on January 2 - the date of the start of camping.
Omonia Nicosia and Nigeria Football Federation have seemingly reached an agreement that would see Uzoho remain in Cyprus until after the league game against AEL Limassol on January 2.
Uzoho has to ensure during the training camp that he does not slip down the pecking order of goalkeepers for a third consecutive Africa Cup of Nations.
In 2019, the former Deportivo de La Coruña glovesman who was first choice the year before at the World Cup, played second fiddle to Daniel Akpeyi and in the 2021 edition, he was backup to Maduka Okoye.
Since the end of the 2021 AFCON, Uzoho has been the most used national team player having gone the distance in fifteen of the sixteen games played by the Super Eagles A team.
