WAFCONQ Cape Verde 1 Nigeria 2: Super-sub Okoronkwo, Ajibade on target in come-from-behind win
Published: December 05, 2023
The Super Falcons defeated Cape Verde 2-1 in the second leg of the CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers played at the Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde on Tuesday evening.
Interim coach Justin Madugu named an unchanged XI from the side that started the first leg last Thursday.
The home side took the lead as early as the 8th minute through Racing Power striker Ivania Moreira
Cape Verde got the chance to double their lead through a corner kick in the 14th minute but the Super Falcons survived the scare.
Moreira's strike was the only difference that separated the two sides heading into the halftime.
At the start of the second half, Madugu made some changes as Peace Efih was replaced by Esther Onyenezide while Esther Okoronkwo came in for Uchenna Kanu.
Okoronkwo thought she had restored parity for Nigeria in the 55th minute but her goal was ruled out for offside.
The UD Tenerife striker eventually grabbed the equaliser in the 62nd minute through a solo finish.
In the 69th minute, Toni Payne had the chance to put Nigeria ahead when she was put through on goal by Okoronkwo but she couldn't beat the Cape Verde goalkeeper with her effort.
Rasheedat Ajibade was the next in line to get the chance to give the away side the lead but couldn't hit the target.
The Atlético de Madrid Femenino forward would get the Super Falcons the winning goal in the 3rd minute of the additional time.
The result means Nigeria edge Cape Verde 7-1 aggregate and have secured their place in the next year edition of the Nations Cup
