Much ado about nothing: Super Eagles left-back Onyemaechi gets green light to face Lesotho
Published: November 15, 2023
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that Boavista left-back Bruno Onyemaechi is available for selection for Nigeria's 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Thursday.
There had been fears that Onyemaechi was set to miss the clash against the Crocodiles after he was substituted early in the second half of Sunday's meeting between Boavista and SC Farense.
The left-back trained away from the squad during the national team's first workout on grass on Tuesday, fueling speculation that he was nursing an injury.
However, the fact that Boavista confirmed that Onyemaechi was called up for the World Cup qualification double header and released him to the Nigeria Football Federation indicated that he had not suffered a major injury.
In Wednesday's closed door training session, for the first fifteen minutes open to the media, the fullback took part in all the exercises without any issues.
Manager Jose Peseiro acknowledged that Onyemaechi reported for international duty with a small knock but underlined that he's now fit and an option for tomorrow's matchday squad to face the Crocodiles.
The 24-year-old seems to have the trust of Peseiro, having gone the distance in the last three games contested by the Super Eagles - the only outfield player to do so.
