Arsenal alum who can play six different positions can become cap-tied to Nigeria this month
Published: November 10, 2023
Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Nathan Tella received confirmation of his his invitation toNigeria's senior national team shortly after Bayer Leverkusen's 1- 0 win over Qarabag on Thursday evening following the squad announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation.
In truth, Tella was not surprised about his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles as he had already been informed a few weeks ago that his name was included on the roster for the November internationals against Lesotho and Zimbabwe - something which was played down by allnigeriasoccer.com last weekend.
Tella, who spent a decade at the Arsenal academy and still supports his boyhood club to this day, always harbored the ambition of playing international football for Nigeria though he is eligible for 1966 world champions England where he was born and raised.
The Nigeria Football Federation have recruited a dual national who will bring versatility to the Super Eagles squad.
Tella can play six different positions on the pitch including wing-back, right winger, left winger, centre forward, support striker and attacking midfielder.
The versatile winger will be cap-tied to Nigeria and will not be eligible to represent England again should he appear in any of the World Cup qualifiers this month as both games are competitive and the 1999-born player is not an U21 player.
Tella flourished last season in the Championship at Burnley, scoring a career-high 17 goals in 39 appearances to help the team coached by Vincent Kompany secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
