2023 WWC: Five observations from Super Falcons loss on penalties to Lionesses
Published: August 07, 2023
The Super Falcons journey at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup came to an end after the defeat to England.
The Lioness defeated Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after regulation and extra time ended goalless.
Allnigeriasoccer.com highlights five observations from the game.
1) First half mistake by Blessing Demehin
The young defender struggled with the press from the English strikers and almost made a costly mistake midway through the first half, which provided Russo an opportunity to fire from the edge of the box but was her effort was saved by Chiamaka Nnadozie.
2) Super Falcons fail to capitalize on counter attack
The Super Falcons throughout the tournament have been brilliant defensively but struggled in transition against the European champions.
The inability of the Super Falcons to transit play from a defensive situation to attack contributed to their exit.
3) Chiamaka Nnadozie shows class
The Nigerian goalkeeper showed her class again against the Lionesses. In the first half, Nnadozie made some crucial saves, to keep Nigeria in the game.
However, the goalkeeper will need to improve her distribution and ability to play with the feet.
4) Ifeoma Onumonu fails to impress again
Onumonu since making her debut for Nigeria has been criticized for her average performance. She was replaced by Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala who was not one hundred percent fit to start the game.
5) Waldrum showed his tactical strength
The Super Falcons coach showed his tactical ability, matching his England counterpart to deny the European champions a lot of chances while the Super Falcons had more shots at goal - the most since Sarina Wiegman took over the Lionesses.
