2023 WWC: Super Falcons to face European champions England in round of 16
Published: August 01, 2023
The Super Falcons are set to face European champions England in the round of 16 of the FIFA Women's World Cup on Monday, August 7.
Nigeria finished second in Group B with 5 points, a point behind group winners Australia who had 6 points and that has set them up with a round of 16 tie against the Lionesses who finished top of Group A with 9 points.
Both sides are unbeaten in the three games played so far but England edges their counterpart with most wins, most goals scored and least goals conceded which makes them the favourite heading into the game.
The last time both teams met was in 1995 when the West Africans lost to the Europeans in the group stage
This would be the third time that the Super Falcons will be appearing at the knockout phases with their best outing being a quarterfinal finish in 1999.
The Lionesses have advanced to the knockout phases on four occasions and came close to winning in 2015 when they finished third.
