'We want to get three points' - Randy Waldrum admits Super Falcons are in a good position
Published: July 31, 2023
Nigeria manager Randy Waldrum has acknowledged that the Super Falcons are in a good position heading into their final group game of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup against the Republic of Ireland at the Suncorp in Brisbane on Monday morning.
The Super Falcons have their own destiny in their hands, knowing that a draw against the Girls In Green guarantees them qualification to the round of 16 regardless of the outcome of the other Group B game involving Olympic champions Canada and co-hosts Australia.
Nigeria are having an impressive tournament despite beset by off the field problems before their trip to Australia.
The Super Falcons' win against Australia and opening day draw with Canada means they sit top of Group B with four points accumulated before the showdown with the Republic of Ireland.
Speaking to Nigerian reporters on Sunday, Waldrum said: "Obviously we are in a really good position and so we're looking much more forward to it than if we had dropped both of our first matches. We know how difficult it's going to be.
"Ireland have got a very good team, I think they were very unlucky not to get results out of their first matches as well so we know it's not a given. We haven't advanced yet so we know how important the game is going to be.
"We want to get the three points because if we do that then we have a chance of winning the group and that would be amazing. I don't think anybody except us would have expected that so I know it's important to them and they'd love to win the group.
"Getting the three points gets us in regardless of the other game and even a point out of the game will get us advanced but they are hungry to get the three points and to top the group if possible."
Providing a squad update, the American football tactician revealed that the Super Falcons are in better shape compared to their last meeting with Australia.
"Actually, we are doing better than we were last week, slowly starting to get everybody back to full strength so I think we should be in good shape for the match," Waldrum stressed.
