The Super Falcons secured their first victory at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup on Thursday, coming from behind to beat co-host Australia 3-2 courtesy of goals from Uchenna Kanu, Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the game.
1. Solid defensive display from Super Falcons
The Super Falcons again showed their impressive display defensively against Australia.
Falcons defensive solidity limited Australia to just eight attempts on target, despite attempting 28 shots.
2. Oldie but goodie : Osinachi Ohale catches the eye
The performance of the veteran defender highlights the incredible display by the Falcons defensively.
The 31-year-old made two tackles, four clearances and scored a goal.
3. Randy Waldrum displays tactical awareness
The tactical awareness and ability of Randy Waldrum to impact the game was vital against Australia.
Waldrum switched the positions of Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu in the first half, a move that led to the first goal.
Also, the introduction of Asisat Oshoala and Esther Okoronkwo provided more threat for Falcons in the second half.
4. Improved second half performance
The Super Falcons displayed an improved performance in the second half compared to the first.
Nigeria scored two goals in the second half and had four attempts on target, compared to one in the first half.
5. Ifeoma Onumonu struggles
Onumonu started in the center forward position with the absence of Oshoala who suffered a knock against Canada.
The Super Falcons number 6 again failed to impress for Nigeria. The 29-year-old failed to make an attempt on goal in 63 minutes of action.
