Flying Eagles coach clears self of bribery scandal, recalls win against Italy and Argentina
Published: June 22, 2023
Flying Eagles coach to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina, Ladan Bosso has insisted that he never took bribes to have players in his squads for national team commitments.
There has been widespread beliefs among football fans that Nigerian coaches are comprised whenever they are on charge of the national teams but Bosso, who is the President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, has exonerated himself of any wrongdoing since he began his coaching career.
The onetime Wikki Tourists and Gombe United coach spoke to Brila FM Lagos Thursday on the issue of discipline among Nigerian coaches and the enabling environment for them to blossom.
Bosso also expressed sense of fulfillment after his team defeated hosts Argentina, and group rivals, Italy during the tournament.
"I'm able to do my job without compromising. Nobody can say that gave me anything be a part of the team. That's why I say that the Federation need to provide all the support that our coaches need.
"We were able to defeat Italy which no other Nigerian team have defeated before. We also beat Argentina in their home ground for the first time," Bosso told Brila FM on Thursday.
Reacting on the comments made by Bosso, former Super Eagles left back Ifeanyi Udeze hailed the feat of Flying Eagles head coach and his players for reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Bosso insisted that the coaches need all the support of the Nigeria Football Federation in order to avoid situations where they attend tournaments with players that they should not have in their squads.
Udeze reacted to the comments made by Bosso of being incorruptible with a loud laughter on radio, but with a tinge of seriousness, said soon afterwards:
"I hope Ladan would agree to take an oath to exonerate himself of any wrongdoing as regards collection of bribes.
"But all jokes aside, nobody expected that the Flying Eagles team would reach the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.
"Based on that, he has the bragging rights. Give it to him although it must be said that the team didn't win the title in Argentina," Udeze argued.
There are unconfirmed reports that Bosso is being touted as a possible replacement for Salisu Yusuf for the job of the U-23 national team that failed to pick a ticket to the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations which produces Africa's representatives at the Football event of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
