'We must not allow another upset' - Lawal warns Super Eagles ahead of AFCONQ v Sierra Leone
Published: June 14, 2023
Former Super Eagles winger Garba Lawal has posited that the Nigerian national team set to play Sierra Leone in their penultimate round of qualifiers to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast must not allow another upset against them.
The Super Eagles need a win from their two games left in the qualification campaign to book their berth at the Africa Cup of Nations to be held in the west African country in January 2024.
Speaking to Brila FM Lagos, the onetime Esperance of Tunisia star who was one of Nigeria's standout players at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France warned that the attitude to the remaining games in the qualifiers must be positive.
"In football, what matters is the victory. Nobody remembers whether you played good football or not. What matters is the three points on offer," Lawal said.
"The Super Eagles must not give room for complacency. It's going to be 50/50 and it's not going to be an easy game for the team. We must not allow another upset from a supposedly weaker teams.
"They (Super Eagles players) have to be organized, that will make the job easy for the coaches because the philosophy and methodology has to be the same."
The Eagles are having closed doors training sessions at the Mobolaji Johnson stadium, Lagos before their trip to Monrovia.
Sierra Leone play their home matches away from home as their home turfs are not approved by the Confederation of African Football.
