Nigeria star Plumptre keen on Women's World Cup action after Leicester's relegation scare
Published: June 02, 2023
Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has spoken in glowing terms about the survival of her Women’s Super League club's survival in the just concluded season and the desire to have a good 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Nigeria will face Canada, Australia and Republic of Ireland at the Women's World Cup which holds between July 20 and August 20, 2023.
The Foxes concluded their campaign with a 1-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday and Plumptre granted a no-holds-barred interview with LCFC TV about the season just ended and her plans for her country Nigeria.
“I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break,” Plumptre noted.
“I've got a few niggles here and there, so I just want time to rest, get on top of that and then try and be in the best shape possible to be able to represent Nigeria,” the defender told LCFC TV.
Plumptre heaped plaudits on her club for a battling performance all season long which happens to be the second time the Leicestershire-born defender will escape relegation.
The Leicester men's team were however not lucky as the ladies, meaning the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi would either play their club football in the Championship or get new clubs.
