Ugbade reveals 'the only problem' Golden Eaglets had in narrow defeat to Young Atlas Lions
Published: May 03, 2023
Golden Eaglets manager Nduka Ugbade was understandably disappointed following his side's 1-0 loss to the Young Atlas Lions of Morocco in their second group game of the ongoing Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
With twenty seven shots mustered, the five-time world champions could not turn their dominance into a victory.
The likes of Abubakar Abdullahi, Emmanuel Michael, Favour Daniel, Yahaya Lawali and Light Eke failed to get their names on the score sheet when presented with opportunities to equalize.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Ugbade underlined that the outcome of the match would have been different if the Golden Eaglets had converted their chances.
"Everything worked absolutely well. We controlled the game but tactically Morocco controlled the outcome," Ugbade told reporters.
"We had some few mistakes as well but we created so many chances, and the only problem is that we couldn’t score."
Looking ahead to the next match against South Africa, the 1985 U16 world champion called for his players to be more ruthless in front of goal.
"It does happen in football. It is not a strange thing, but it is important to correct and ensure we are more efficient in front of goal."
Nigeria remain second in Group B with three points by virtue of having a better goal difference than their opponents on Saturday, South Africa.
