U17 AFCON Nigeria 0 Morocco 1 : Ogboji's unfortunate own goal helps Young Atlas Lions seal win
Published: May 03, 2023
Nigeria's U-17 national team, Golden Eaglets on Wednesday suffered a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in their second Group B match of the 2023 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.
Central defender Tochukwu Ogboji inadvertently scored an own goal two minutes into the game as the Nigerian lads were put under intense pressure.
Left back Emmanuel Michael found Abubakar Abdullahi with a good cross 21 minutes into the game but a timely block from the Atlas Cubs denied the enterprising midfielder of Nigeria's equaliser.
Nigeria's goalscorer against Zambia, Daniel Favour, latched onto a through ball deep from the Nigerian half in the 25th minute but the Moroccan goalkeeper came off his lines and cleared swiftly from the edge of the box.
The Golden Eaglets captain Precious Williams also had a chance to restore parity for the two-time African U-17 champions but the north Africans were disciplined in defence and were able to repel the threat.
The Eaglets launched another lighting quick counter 13 minutes into the second half but the impressive Moroccan goalkeeper Taha Benrhozil eventually saved what might have been an equaliser.
Favour Daniel and second half substitute Light Eke went close to getting the seemingly elusive goals in the 71 and 85 minutes of the game but were unlucky with the disciplined Moroccan defence rising to the challenge.
The Eaglets will round off their group games with a tie against South Africa.
