'We have better players' - Omeruo makes interesting claim about current Super Eagles team
Published: March 26, 2023
Kenneth Omeruo was the Super Eagles player selected for media duties on the eve of Nigeria's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Guinea-Bissau, which is a strong hint that he will be involved in some capacity at the Estádio 24 de Setembro, Bissau on Monday, March 27.
The CD Leganes star is the second most experienced player in the current Nigeria squad, having made his senior debut a decade ago, and was a very key member of the team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations whilst still a teenager.
Omeruo, who has a foot in both camps, has suggested that the current Super Eagles squad is better than the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning side which had the then Chelsea stars Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel, Emmanuel Emenike, Lazio ace Eddy Onazi and Efe Ambrose.
Three-time African champions Nigeria started the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in the best way possible with maximum points from their first two games, but now have their backs against the wall after suffering a shock 1-0 home loss to Guinea-Bissau on Friday.
Omeruo has admitted that he has a big role to play in terms of talking to the younger players in the current Super Eagles squad in order to make sure the Super Eagles don't lose their status as one of the powerhouses of African football.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Omeruo said : "First of all, it's not just me, me and the captain Ahmed Musa. Believe me, we have better players with better qualities now than we did when we won the AFCON.
"This is why I think it's something we can definitely do. My role is do my best on the pitch and try to advise especially the new ones coming in.
"The coaches, they do a great job in training, they make sure the videos are available for us to watch the opponent so when we are going into the pitch we are ready.
"We were just a bit unlucky and tomorrow by God's grace we'll correct everything that wasn't done right."
Omeruo has not started a game for the Super Eagles since January 23, 2022 when he went the distance against Tunisia in the round of 16 of AFCON 2021.
