Iwobi on Super Eagles' missed scoring chances, next game; refuses to comment on state of pitch
Published: March 25, 2023
Alex Iwobi was the player chosen to represent the Super Eagles players at the post-match press conference after the national team's shock 1-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Friday evening.
Statistically, the Everton star has emerged as the most trusted outfield player since Jose Peseiro was handed the managerial reigns, having gone the distance in seven consecutive matches.
The Super Eagles A team have lost their last three matches, while conceding seven goals and scoring once.
Iwobi underlined that the Super Eagles strikers have been scoring goals at their respective clubs and they were unlucky to lose to Guinea-Bissau.
On the plan to turn the situation around, Iwobi answered : "To start with everybody is scoring goals in their clubs. Like the coach said we created many chances today, Guinea probably had like three.
"If you check the stats, we had opportunities to score, it's one of those days we didn't score. We could have played as many hours and it's just one of those days we had bad luck but I'm sure if we play them again, luck will be on our side.
"We created so many chances and just luck wasn't for us today."
Prior to the visit of Guinea-Bissau, the last time the Super Eagles played at the National Stadium in Abuja, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana, a result that saw them miss out on qualification to the 2022 World Cup.
Iwobi has sent a message to the fans that have been criticizing the Super Eagles for their poor form.
"First and foremost, us as players and staff we know we have to react. We are going to look at the game and analyze what we are going to do to improve.
"The only thing I can say to the fans is that they should stick by us and support us because we are giving a 100 percent not just for ourselves but for the nation.
"Every time we come here and represent the country, we are fighting, there are so many people and we know that we are privileged and honored to wear the shirt, so I'm telling you now that next game we'll going to do our best to make sure we get a result."
Iwobi declined to comment on the state of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium pitch, which was visibly in poor condition.
