Why Chelsea winger Madueke should choose Super Eagles over the Three Lions
Published: March 03, 2023
Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is one of the many players born abroad but eligible to play for Nigeria as he has Nigerian parents.
He has represented the Young Lions at youth level but he is yet to get a call-up from Gareth Southgate for the senior national team.
In this article, I will be citing reasons why the former PSV Eindhoven star should choose the Super Eagles of Nigeria over England.
The 20-year-old plays as a right winger, a position which is currently being occupied by either Ademola Lookman or Samuel Chukwueze for the Super Eagles.
However, both have failed to convince that they deserve to own that spot, though they have shown flashes of brilliance.
Lookman has featured six times for the Super Eagles, scoring one goal and registering 2 assists. The Atalanta man has shown that he is better suited playing as a secondary striker than a right winger and that is why he is enjoying a great season for the Blacks and Blues in Serie A.
Samuel Chukwueze is also enjoying a good spell with Villarreal in La Liga, scoring 3 goals and registering 3 assists.
He has however failed to convince that he deserves to be Super Eagles' first-choice right winger with his inconsistent performances.
The fact that the 23-year-old has scored 4 goals in 24 appearances is a testament to his inconsistency.
Alex Iwobi is another option the Super Eagles coached have used in that position, deploying him as the right midfielder/winger but he has shown that is not his favourite position.
This uncertainty in the right-wing creates room for Noni Madueke if he can come in and perform consistently to make that spot his own.
When you compare this situation with that of the Three Lions of England, Madueke stands little or no chance to break into the first team.
This is because that spot is being occupied by Bukayo Saka or Marcus Rashford, two of England's best players at the moment.
Gareth Southgate is a rigid manager and he has proven that he only trusts players that have done well for him.
This is why players like Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham haven't gotten enough playing time with the English national team.
Hence, the prospect of Madueke getting into the Super Eagles of Nigeria and playing regularly is bigger and better than that of England and that is why the Chelsea star should decide to play for Nigeria.
