Super Eagles LB wins League Cup with Porto, 88 days after he last played an official game
Published: January 29, 2023
Nigeria international Zaidu Sanusi made his comeback from injury as Porto defeated fierce rivals Sporting CP 2-0 to win the Portuguese League Cup on Saturday, January 28.
Prior to the League Cup showpiece at the Estádio José Alvalade XXI, the left-back had not featured for Porto since suffering an injury in a Champions League meeting with Atlético Madrid on November 1.
Sanusi suffered a tear in the abductor muscle in the second half against the Spanish opponents - an injury that saw him miss thirteen consecutive matches played by Porto.
The 25-year-old was also left out of the Super Eagles squad for the glamour friendly against Portugal on November 17.
Porto manager Sérgio Conceição made his first substitution with eleven minutes left to play, bringing on Sanusi to replace Wendell, who was walking a disciplinary tightrope after picking up a yellow card in the 67th minute.
Sanusi returning to fitness will be sweet music to the ears of Jose Peseiro ahead of the resumption of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Porto won the 83rd official trophy in their history courtesy of goals from Eustaquio and Marcano, and became the club with the most titles in the history of Portuguese football,
