'No turning back' - Man Utd legend Van Nistelrooy reacts to Madueke's imminent Chelsea move
Published: January 20, 2023Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has confessed that PSV are resigned to losing Nonso Madueke in the coming days, with a return to London imminent, five years after the winger turned down a scholarship at Tottenham Hotspur before sealing a transfer to the Eindhoven club.
The England U21 international with a Nigerian background is already in the English capital undergoing a medical ahead of his unveiling.
PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Madueke and there's no issue on the player's side for the time being as he has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League side.
The Eredivisie side have already lined up a replacement for the Chelsea-bound winger, in Wolverhampton Wanderers' Fabio Silva, and another player of interest is Villarreal's Nigerian-born winger Arnaut Danjuma.
PSV manager Van Nistelrooy revealed at the pre-match press conference before his side's meeting with Vitesse that Madueke wanted to return to London at all costs and the player was sold because the transfer fee was too good to turn down.
"A mix of emotions. We are losing a good player because of his departure. There was no turning back and there was a solid financial compensation. I can empathize with the importance of the club," Van Nistelrooy told reporters.
"Given the circumstances, with the financial compensation, we have decided to sell," he added.
Madueke is expected to cost Chelsea a fee of 35 million euros, and will sign a multi-year contract subject to him passing a medical examination.
