'The ankle has gone inside' - Everton icon raises concerns over Iwobi's injury suffered v Man Utd
Published: January 07, 2023Everton icon Alan Stubbs, is hoping for the best possible outcome for Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi who was stretchered off on Friday night in Everton's 3-1 defeat against Manchester United in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Iwobi was having a relatively good game as he made a great block in the first half despite being guilty of giving the ball away that led to a quick counter attack for the Red Devils.
Four minutes into the second half, Iwobi was unable to continue and replaced by Abdoulaye Doucoure after he was accidentally caught on the ankle by Tyrell Malacia as he broke forward.
Iwobi screamed in pain as he hit the deck and was attended to by Everton's medical team, while his concerned teammates gathered around him.
Stubbs, while speaking on the BBC Radio Merseyside, feared that the former Arsenal forward could be facing a spell on the sidelines.
"Alex Iwobi has just gone over on his ankle and the ankle has gone inside. I'm hoping he hasn't done his ankle ligaments because it looks like that," Stubbs told the BBC.
"The momentum of the challenge from Malacia has rocked his ankle. It'll either be one where he has jarred it and is fine to carry on or he won't be able to continue and could be out for a few weeks.
"I'm hoping what we're seeing now is just precautionary but Iwobi looks upset. Players know when something is bad.
The Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro would also wish that the injury is not a big one as his team will resume the qualification campaign for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in March.
