Not passing to Awoniyi : Nottingham Forest star admits he made wrong decision v Chelsea
Published: January 05, 2023Nottingham Forest striker Brennan Johnson has admitted that he made a wrong decision not to pass to Taiwo Awoniyi during the second half of their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on New Year's Day, but stressed that he has learned from the situation.
In the opening minutes of the second half at the City Ground, Johnson opted to go for goal rather than finding Awoniyi who was in a great position to score.
Morgan Gibbs-White released Johnson in acres of space down the right flank and he raced towards goal.
Awoniyi raced forward in support, but Johnson ignored him and went for the strike himself that Kepa kept out with a strong hand before the Blues scrambled away the rebound much to the disappointment of the Nigerian who kept on remonstrating.
Against Southampton on Wednesday, Johnson atoned for his error by setting up Awoniyi's match-winning strike in the 27th minute.
The Nottingham Forest number 20 pounced on a mistake by Lyanco and squared the ball for the Nigeria international to tap in for his first away goal in this season's Premier League.
Asked if he learned from a similar situation against Chelsea, Johnson told the match broadcaster : "I am learning every game, it's such a demanding league
"Last week (On Sunday), I know I may have made the wrong decision but today there's only one thing on my mind - to square it."
Following the win over Southampton, Nottingham Forest, who have suffered two defeats in ten matches in all competitions, are out of the relegation zone.
