The target before four Super Eagles stars in second half of 2022-2023 season
Published: December 25, 2022
The second half of the European football season has restarted after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Fans in the Scottish Premiership have already witnessed one week of action while the English Premier League will continue on Boxing day with seven league games on Monday.
There will be two games on Tuesday and one to be played on Wednesday.
The La Liga restarts on Thursday, December 29 and the Serie A kicks off again on Wednesday January 4.
Allnigeriasoccer.com pinpoints four players of the Super Eagles of Nigeria who should have a target to achieve with their performances in the second half of the season.
What is this target?
The quartet of Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi are presumably believed by many to be Nigeria's best footballers by a mile.
There is still a debate among some section of Nigerian football faithful if the duo of Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi could be regarded as 'world class' or at least one of the best in their respective attacking and midfield positions in the world.
The performances of Osimhen and Ndidi for club and country in the past four seasons have been very great albeit the latter has not reignited his form of previous seasons after copping an injury early in 2022.
Moses Simon was unarguably Nigeria's best player at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
For Alex Iwobi, his output at Everton has significantly improved since manager Frank Lampard moved him from the wings to the midfield position.
Iwobi has scored just one goal in 15 league games for the Toffees but has created numerous scoring chances for his teammates.
As the top leagues around the world get back to action, allnigeriasoccer.com believes the four aforementioned players will have a chance to play themselves onto a greater level.
Gone were the days Nigerian players were on the books of top clubs in Europe.
Nwankwo Kanu (Ajax, Arsenal), Emmanuel Amuneke, Gbenga Okunowo (Barcelona), Finidi George (Ajax), Celestine Babayaro, John Obi Mikel (Chelsea), Taribo West (AC Milan, Inter Milan), Austin Okocha (PSG), Kelechi Iheanacho (Man City) and even Odion Ighalo (Man United) all played for top clubs in their prime.
That hasn't happened for a long while now for Nigerian players as they only turn out for mid-level clubs.
With the transfer attention that Victor Osimhen is receiving in Europe, it is hoped that indeed these clubs like Manchester United are serious about the former youth international.
The four players have been excellent in the 2022/2023 season.
The second half of the season is an opportunity to up their ante and ensure that big clubs will be back for their signatures next summer and the following winter window.
