Why Super Eagles hopeful missed Burnley's defeat at Man Utd amid Southampton recall reports
Published: December 22, 2022Super Eagles hopeful Nathan Tella was conspicuously absent from Burnley's matchday squad as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
It was the second consecutive match that the winger has missed for the Clarets as he also sat out the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough last weekend.
Southampton, Tella's parent club, inserted a recall clause into the deal taking him to Turf Moor in the summer and speculation is rife that the Premier League club may activate the option next month due to his impressive performances at Burnley.
Speaking post-match after the loss to United, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany set the record straight, saying that Tella was unavailable for selection because he was recovering from a bout of flu.
On a positive note, Kompany expects the Nigerian to have fully recovered before the visit of Birmingham City next Tuesday.
The 23-year-old is considered a key player for Burnley, making seventeen starts in the Championship and has found the net on seven occasions.
Manchester United booked a spot n the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford.
