EFL Trophy : Nigerian striker on target as Bolton Wanderers thrash Man Utd 4-0
Published: December 13, 2022Nigerian striker Dapo Afolayan helped Bolton Wanderers thrash Manchester United 4-0 in a Papa Johns Trophy clash held at the University of Bolton Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Trotters advanced to the last eight following the comprehensive victory against the Red Devils development squad.
Apart from Afolayan, another attack-minded player of Nigerian descent in Manchester United's Shola Shoretire was in action from the off, while Maxi Oyedele, fresh from his FA Youth Cup heroics at the weekend, was a non-playing substitute for Manchester United.
Shoretire came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half but couldn't lift his final shot over goalkeeper James Trafford.
After a goalless first half, Afolayan pounced on a header and rolled the ball into an empty net to open the scoring in the 68th minute.
And Aaron Morley doubled the lead with an excellent curling free-kick in the 76th minute before two goals in injury time secured a big win for the home team.
Afolayan could have added to the scoresheet but his powerful effort from close range was saved by the United goalkeeper.
The 25-year-old has netted six goals in 26 appearances for Bolton Wanderers so far in the 2022-2023 season.
