'They haven't got Ronaldo or Messi' - Okocha on qualities that helped Morocco beat Portugal
Published: December 11, 2022
Team spirit and spirit of brotherliness were factors that salvaged a historic win for Morocco Saturday evening against Portugal which was an African first at the semifinals stage of the World Cup according to former Nigeria international Austin Okocha.
Okocha was one of the three analysts on Supersport duty for the late game between France and England but touched on the earlier battle between African representative Morocco and Portugal.
"When you love playing for your nation there's no limit to what you can achieve and these guys (Morocco players) put in everything and got their reward.
"That's the beauty of the game. You stand a chance if you get it right," the Nigeria football icon noted.
"For hey about stars, forget about what you have achieved before. What counts is the game in front of you and they have shown that if you get it right, you are capable of beating anybody.
Speaking further on the qualities of the Moroccans, Okocha said:
"They have team spirit. They haven't got superstars like Ronaldo or Messi in their squad but what they got is unity.
"What they have got is bringing out the best from each other. They challenge each other on being your brother's keeper, bringing out the best in each other, " Okocha who was one of the cult heroes at Bolton Wanderers noted.
