'I'm not sure' - Peseiro admits Ajax left back is touch and go for Portugal clash
Published: November 16, 2022
Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro has admitted that Ajax Amsterdam left back Calvin Bassey is touch and go for the international friendly against Portugal on Thursday evening.
The Leicester City academy product was forced off through injury at halftime against FC Emmen last weekend and it was initially feared that he would miss the friendly, only for him to report for international duty on Monday.
Peseiro admitted that Bassey could be suffering from fatigue having started the last eighteen matches played by Ajax Amsterdam in all competitions.
The 22-year-old will be assessed during the national team's final workout on Wednesday evening before a decision is made on his availability for tomorrow's game.
"He got an injury, not too serious so he came. In this moment we rest him until now because he plays every four days. I hope he can play tomorrow but I'm not sure," Peseiro said to NFF TV.
"Today he will have a test and training. We want to check if he can help us tomorrow or not."
Nigeria are thin in the left-back department heading into the game against Portugal. Seasoned campaigners Ola Aina, Jamilu Collins and Zaidu Sanusi were not invited for the friendly due to injuries.
