'Played well' - Ex-Real Madrid, Tottenham star hails Bassey for display v Rangers
Published: November 02, 2022Former Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur star Rafael van der Vaart has admitted that he was impressed by the display of Calvin Bassey during Ajax Amsterdam's Champions League meeting with Glasgow Rangers at the Ibrox Stadium on Tuesday night.
In an emotional return to the club he left to join Ajax Amsterdam, Bassey helped the Dutch champions secure a 3-1 win over the Scottish Premiership giants.
It was an easy game for Bassey and his defensive partners as they kept Rangers at bay without too much trouble.
The Nigeria international prevented Rangers from taking the lead in the fourteenth minute, clearing Fashion Jnr's back post header off the line.
Rangers got their only goal from the penalty spot as James Tavernier pulled one back with three minutes remaining, only for Francisco Conceição to restore the two-goal advantage two minutes later.
Assessing the first half performance of Ajax, Van der Vaart said on Ziggo Sport, via Voetbal Primeur : "Ajax is much, much better. I also think Calvin Bassey plays well, he feels well at home there (in the center back, ed.).
"Maybe it's also because Wijndal played on that side, which is a bit more dynamic".
Bassey went the distance in the six matches played by Ajax Amsterdam in the group stage of the Champions League and provided two assists.
