2022 FIFA U17 WWC: Five things noticed from Nigeria's win on penalties v Germany
Published: October 30, 2022
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents the five observations from the Flamingos win over Germany Sunday via penalty shootout in the third place final of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
1. Omilana's Improved Performance
Goalkeeper Faith Omilana has significantly improved in her performances. She seemed to be getting better as the tournament went on. Was even on penalties duty.
2. Okenwa 'Early' Substitution
Midfielder Chidera Okenwa provided the assist for Opeyemi Ajakaye's goal, her first of the tournament but was subbed off in the second half moments after missing a gilt-edged chance.
It's unknown now if the change was because of that or purely tactical.
Blamed by her teammates who felt she ought to have passed to a better placed teammate.
Her creativity was somewhat missing afterwards.
3. The Sloppy Nigerian Defence
Defending set-pieces has always been an issue for Nigerian teams and it's time national teams have specialized trainers for each departments.
Gifting the Germans three goals was very poor.
4. Emmanuel's Midfield Powerhouse
The captain Blessing Emmanuel was strong in the tackles in midfield to stop the flow of the Germans.
Lucky to escape a second yellow card.
5. The Flamingos Attack
The Nigerian girls showed that in the face of stiff challenges that they will always score goals. With good form, fitness and commitment to grow in their careers, it will be nice to see these girls in the U-20 setup.
