Man Utd 3 Sheriff 0 : Atiemwen and Akanbi crash out as Red Devils secure top two finish
Published: October 27, 2022Former Nigeria youth international Iyayi Believe Atiemwen and Rasheed Akanbi were unable to help Sheriff Tiraspol advance to the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.
Manchester United defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League matchday five encounter played at Old Trafford.
In the 21st minute, Rasheed Akanbi was booked by the referee for catching Brazilian midfielder Casemiro in the face with a trailing arm.
Akanbi could have put the visitors ahead in the 40th minute but his head could not connect to a cross from Patrick Kpozo.
The Red Devils finally got in front in the 44th minute after Diogo Dalot headed in a cross from Christian Eriksen.
United extended their lead in the 65th minute after Marcus Rashford headed the ball into the net.
In the 9th minute, Akanbi was withdrawn for Pernambuco.
The win got sealed in the 81st minute through Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese's first header was saved but he lashed the rebound into the back of the net.
Nitchita Covali then came on for Atiemwen in the 89th minute.
In the Group E standings, Sheriff Tiraspol are in third place with a total of three points amassed from five games.
Manchester United secured a top two finish with the victory over the Moldovan champions.
