Salzburg 1 Chelsea 2 : No UCL debut for Chukwuemeka, Kano-born striker on target
Published: October 25, 2022Carney Chukwuemeka's wait for his UEFA Champions League debut continues as he was a non-playing substitute for the Premier League side in a 2-1 win over Salzburg at Stadion Salzburg on Tuesday evening.
Chelsea boss Graham Potter brought on Armando Broja, César Azpilicueta, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Hakim Ziyech and Mason Mount as the five substitutes - a move that saw Chukwuemeka remain rooted to the bench for the entirety of the game.
Croatian star Mateo Kovačić put Chelsea ahead in the 23rd minute with a one time left footed shot.
At halftime, the Blues went into the tunnel with a one nil lead.
Four minutes after the second half resumed, Kano-born forward Chukwubuike Adamu restored parity for the hosts after combining with Maximilian Wober.
Kai Havertz restored Chelsea's lead in the 64th minute after receiving a pass from Christian Pulisic.
Chukwuemeka since joining the London club has made the Champions League matchday squad on four occasions but has failed to get minutes.
With the result, Chelsea have qualified to the knockout stages of the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions league and will take on Dinamo Zagreb in their final group game.
Chukwuemeka will be looking forward to making his debut in the dead rubber match against the Croatian side.
