German-born Nigerian defender makes UYL debut for Chelsea in 5-1 loss to Salzburg

Two-time winners Chelsea have crashed out of the UEFA Youth League in the group stage after a 5-1 loss to Salzburg at the Greisbergers Betten-Arena (Grödig) on Tuesday afternoon.

With two draws in their opening four matches, The Blues needed a win against the Austrian side to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the competition.

2003-born German-born defender Derrick Abu was added to Chelsea's UEFA Youth League roster before the trip to Austria.

Abu missed Chelsea U21s' 3-0 win over Blackburn at the weekend due to a knock but recovered in time to play a part against Salzburg.

In what was his first call-up for a UEFA Youth League game, Abu made his debut off the bench, replacing Frankie Runham in the 74th minute, same minute Tudor Mendel-Idowu came on to make his third consecutive appearance in the group stage.

Salzburg took a 3-1 lead into the break thanks to goals from Crescenti and Konaté (2), while Mothersille netted a consolation for the visitors.

Konate put the game beyond the reach of Chelsea when he netted his third of the game in the 71st minute and Lechner added further gloss to the scoreline at minute 90.
