Super Eagles suffer fresh injury blow as another English-based player departs camp pre-Algeria
Published: September 24, 2022
The Super Eagles have suffered a fresh injury blow ahead of their international friendly against the Algeria national team.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed on Saturday evening that William Troost-Ekong has left the Super Eagles camp after sustaining an injury during the test game against Algeria's home-based team.
The Watford central defender is the second English-based player to be decamped after the team's arrival in Algeria, following in the footsteps of Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who was forced to leave camp in order not to aggravate an existing injury.
Troost-Ekong started Nigeria's 2-2 draw with Algeria's home-based team on Friday, partnering Chidozie Awaziem and Valentine Ozornwafor in defence.
The Tottenham Hotspur academy product was not in tiptop condition, match fitness-wise, before yesterday's clash against Algeria B, considering that he logged 97 minutes from a possible 900 in the EFL Championship before he reported for international duty.
Troost-Ekong was aiming to build up his match fitness by playing the two matches against Algeria during the international break.
He has returned to England for further medical checks ahead of Watford's Championship clash against Stoke City.
