'They're not picking him up' - Ex-Chelsea star blames Fulham defence for Awoniyi's goal
Published: September 17, 2022Nottingham Forest are deep in relegation trouble after suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Fulham at the City Ground on Friday night despite taking the lead through Taiwo Awoniyi.
The Nigeria international, coming into the team after three appearances off the bench, found space and finished superbly after ten minutes - his second goal in Nottingham Forest's colours.
Fulham came back strongly in the second half, scoring through Tosin Adarabioyo, João Palhinha and Harrison Reed, and there was a bit of fightback with thirteen minutes to go as Lewis O'Brien came on and was an impact sub, pulling one back to set up a nervy finish.
Awoniyi opened the scoring when he found himself unmarked at the back post from a corner and nodded past Cottagers goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Former Chelsea Women star Karen Carney, who was on punditry duties for Premier League Productions, has insisted that the Fulham defence did not do enough to stop the Super Eagles striker from getting on the scoresheet.
Carney said : "Set pieces are massive and when you get the delivery right, you put it into a good area, he gets away from his marker, and the back post there they are not picking him up and then you got a great chance.
"But it's all about the delivery and take your opportunities from set pieces and then growing your confidence from there."
Nottingham Forest have now lost four games on the bounce and are second from bottom in the provisional Premier League standings with four points from seven matches.
