Premier League makes major decision that affects Super Eagles stars
Published: September 09, 2022Through a statement on their official website, the Premier League has announced the postponement of this weekend's games.
The matchday seven fixtures have been postponed in order to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The British Monarch's death was announced by the Royal family on Thursday, September 8.
"As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication," the Premier League said in a statement.
"This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation, but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing."
Seven Super Eagles players, who ply their trade in the English topflight, were in contention to be in action for their respective clubs.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis would have been in Nottingham Forest's squad to face Leeds United.
Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho's Leicester City were billed to face fellow strugglers Aston Villa at the King Power.
Everton who have Alex Iwobi on their payroll would have been traveling to face Arsenal at the Emirates.
Barring any injury, Frank Onyeka would have been named in Brentford's matchday squad for their encounter with Joe Aribo's Southampton.
Carney Chukwuemeka's Chelsea were to face Fulham.
Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided by the EPL in due course.
