Anglo-Nigerian CB plays first competitive game since arrival at Liverpool from Southampton

Promising Anglo-Nigerian central defender Oludare Olufunwa played his first competitive match since his arrival at Liverpool as their development squad narrowly lost 2-1 to Salford City in a Papa John's Trophy clash staged at The Peninsula Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Olympic National Team hopeful joined Liverpool this month following his release by Southampton at the end of his contract in June.

Olufunwa was a non-playing substitute in two Premier League 2 matches against Brighton & Hove and Tottenham Hotspur before the trip to Greater Manchester to take on the first team of the League Two club.

He will initially start his journey at Anfield with the U21 squad and is eligible to be registered on Liverpool's Premier League roster as an U21 player.

Wearing the number 76 at the back of his jersey, Olufunwas was in action for the entire duration of the game.

The 21-year-old has played in the Papa John's Trophy before, making two appearances during his time with Southampton.

Kevin Berkoe fired Salford City into the lead just before halftime and  Jack Jenkins doubled the advantage at minute 59 before the visitors pulled one back through Stewart, who swept the ball into the bottom corner in the 88th minute.
