Southampton 2 Chelsea 1 : Super Eagles star subbed in, Chukwuemeka non-playing sub
Published: August 30, 2022Goals from Roméo Lavia and Adam Armstrong were enough to give Southampton a win over Chelsea in a Premier League match at the St. Mary's Stadium on Tuesday night.
Super Eagles star Joe Aribo was brought on in the 60th minute as a replacement for Lavia, while Anglo-Nigerian youngster Carney Chukwuemeka was an unused substitute.
This is the second consecutive game that Aribo would be coming on, having played a substitute role in the loss to Manchester United last weekend.
On the other hand, Chukwuemeka's search for his Premier League debut in the colors of Chelsea continued.
Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea the lead in the 24th minute, following a well placed pass from Mason Mount.
The Saints would go on to equalize in the 28th minute through a beautiful shot from Lavia.
James Ward-Prowse's cross from the corner kick was deflected by César Azpilicueta to the feet of Belgian midfielder Lavia who shot beyond the reach of Edouard Mendy to bring the Saints level.
The tides changed before halftime as Ralph Hasenhüttl's men raced into the lead through Adam Armstrong.
Mohamed Elyounoussi's pullback found Armstrong who would go on to shoot the ball to the top of the net in the 45th minute.
As the second half resumed, the Blues made a couple of changes but it had no effect.
In the provisional standings, Southampton are sitting 7th with seven points from five matches while the Blues are 8th with seven points from the same number of games.
