2022 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup : Five observations from Nigeria's 3-1 win vs Canada
Published: August 18, 2022
Nigeria will play against Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica as they confirmed their top place finish in Group C.
Christopher Danjuma's girls defeated Canada 3-1 and these are the five things allnigeriasoccer.com noticed from the game.
Cheerful Canadians
The first thing that caught attention was the lively spirit of the Canadians girls.
Despite their elimination from the tournament irrespective of the outcome of the match against Nigeria, they players seemed unfazed by the situation.
The camera panned to the bench after Nigeria's third goal and the players were seen in good mood.
Instructively the Canadian team saw the tournament as a learning curve and they certainly have some bright talents in the team like Kaila Novak.
Vocal Danjuma
Head coach of the Falconets Christopher Danjuma gave instructions from the byline and it worked out well as the players execute his tactics.
That strategy of regularly talking seems to be the way to go for women's teams especially the youth sides.
Danjuma was heard shouting "calm down" in the 72nd minute after the team missed a good chance to score and gave away the balls.
He also commended them when they had done a great job like closing down the opponents.
Playing Out From the Back
Teams these days buildup from the defence with the goalkeepers initiating it but this tactic was nullified by Canada early on as Kaila Novak put pressure on Monle Oyono to score which was Nigeria's first conceded goal.
Good Crosses From the Full backs
Against Canada, the full backs did a better job than their previous games with the quality of their deliveries.
One of Rofiat Imuran's crosses in the first half led to the first penalty scored by Esther Onyenezide while she was also on hand for Chioma Olise's goal.
Jumoke Alani also did very well but Chiamaka Okwuchukwu in particular could not capitalise on the aerial chances created by those good whips into the box.
Sabastine Is A Handful
She, may not have scored but Flourish Sabastine is a threat for defence in the ongoing World Cup.
The Canadians could not keep with her nimble feet.
The number 9 came off the bench but is expected to start against the Netherlands in the quarterfinal.
