FIFA U20 Women's World Cup : Five observations from Nigeria's 1-0 win v South Korea
Published: August 15, 2022
The following are takeaways from the Falconets 1-0 win over South Korea at the ongoing FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
Super Falconets started the better side
The Falconets were the better team by a mile when the game kicked off on Sunday night.
The girls did not lose awful lots of balls and had more percentage of the possession.
Korea grew into the game
The Nigerian side started better but the Koreans however had more shots on target and could have taken the lead from their numerous chances which either came off the woodwork or Nigerian keeper Oyono being called to duty to keep out the dangerous balls.
Korea dangerous from set pieces
If there is something that coach Christopher Danjuma should take away from his team's win against Korea Republic is that he needs to sharpen the dead ball skills of the players.
Having players who are dead ball specialists helps when it is increasingly difficult to break down defences.
Lee Suin's powerful shot from a free kick came off the woodwork plus other opportunities that the Asians had.
Idoko, Onyenezide Factors
The attention of the Koreans would have naturally been on Nigeria's goalscorer in their match against France, Flourish Sabastine but the duo of Mercy Idoko and Esther Onyenezide have proven that they are players who can unlock opposition defences.
Both players are creative in midfield and are also keen to get stuck-in.
Onyenezide goal is already a contender for goal of the tournament.
Crosses Need To Get Better
Aside sloppy passes, one other area that the Falconets need to work on is the quality of their deliveries into the box.
Some of the crosses from right back, Jumoke Alani left much to be desired albeit she was comfortable with bringing the ball out of the defence.
