Opinion : Manchester United need Super Eagles striker this transfer window
Published: August 14, 2022In our penultimate feature of Nigerian players, we look at why Victor Osimhen should be Erik ten Hag's next transfer target at Manchester United and second full fledged Super Eagles star to represent the elite club after Odion Ighalo.
Napoli and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen was reportedly attracting interests from some top European clubs this summer but no deal eventually materialized.
The former Nigeria youth international was linked with clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
With Manchester United starting their 2022/2023 campaign on a disastrous note, bottom of the table after defeats to Brighton and Hove (2-1) and Brentford (4-0), they need to arrest that situation with the acquisition of Osimhen who is guaranteed to score tons of goals provided the midfield is also addressed with less than three weeks to the end of transfer business.
The recent statement by Napoli President that he will not sign African players again unless they accept to shun representing their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations did not go well with many football technocrats and coaches condemning what they described as a racial slur.
Osimhen has two years left on his contract but there is a sinking feeling that he will be sold with a year to run on the deal with the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast to be part of the possible talks of an extension.
Cristiano Ronaldo is still at the club and seems not to be attracting the interest of big clubs this summer.
Should the likes of Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho up the ante and deliver, that means that Osimhen would have world class stars to work with.
Should Osimhen join United this summer and everything falls in place on and off the pitch, the Nigerian is guaranteed to score at least 15 league goals for United where his Super Eagles buddy and senior colleague Odion Ighalo had a short but memorable stint.
