Arsenal legend references Moses as he backs Ryan Sessegnon to flourish as a wing-back
Published: August 11, 2022Arsenal legend Ian Wright is backing Tottenham Hotspur young star Ryan Sessegnon to flourish in a wing-back role under Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte.
Sessegnon netted the first goal scored by the north London club in the new season as they recovered from going a goal down to beat Joe Aribo's Southampton 4-1 in a Premier League game on Saturday.
The Fulham academy product offers versatility as he is capable of playing as a left-back and left winger.
Now he is being moulded into a wing-back by Conte, just as the Italian football tactician succeeded with Victor Moses and Ivan Perišić at Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively.
In his maiden season in England, Conte switched to a back three after a loss to Arsenal and converted Moses into a right wing-back while Marcos Alonso was deployed as a left wing-back.
The former Nigeria international was one of the most consistent performers for Chelsea in 2016-2017, making 40 appearances in all competitions and directly participated in eight goals.
Just like Moses thrived with Conte in the dugout at Chelsea, Wright believes the Italian can revitalize the career of Sessegnon.
In quotes relayed by Spurs Web citing Wrighty's House Podcast, Wright said : "But we saw some green shoots last season.
"Him playing there and getting the opportunity to continue to play there under Conte.
"You know what Conte is like. As he did with Victor Moses, he will give you the birth if you are ready to go."
Moses also played the wing-back role when he reunited with Conte at Inter Milan in the second half of the 2019-2020 season.
