Opinion : Super Eagles star who can fit into Manchester City's system
Published: August 11, 2022The summer transfer window is about three weeks away to its end and while we have been thrilled by some of the transfers we have witnessed, Nigerian football faithful are not too pleased that only a few of their players get the chance to strut their talent at big clubs.
Izuchukwu Michael in this piece highlights how Ndidi can fit into Manchester City's system.
Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City to Manchester City)
There is a debate in some quarters whether Wilfred Ndidi and international teammate Victor Osimhen can be classified as 'world class talents' as they are arguably the most gifted two players based in Europe that Nigeria can boast of at the moment.
Big clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Arsenal were sometime ago linked with Ndidi but none of them happened.
Ndidi may never be considered as good as N'Golo Kante whom he apparently replaced at Leicester City when he arrived from Belgian club Genk but he is not far off from the France international of Malian descent.
Ndidi could have been a good replacement for Brazil's Fernandinho who went back to Brazil.
City went for Leeds United's former smooth operator Kalvin Phillips but could Ndidi could have been a better fit for the Citizens?
Two seasons ago, Ndidi's defensive figures were certainly one of the best in the Premier League as he shields the backline of the Foxes.
However last season injuries put paid to that hitherto good statistics.
Ndidi's interception and ball winning ability is akin to Fernandinho's. They have similar heights and could ping the cross field passes.
Ndidi is fit again and with Leicester City not seemingly not as ambitious as the title-winning side of 2015/2016 season with nO signing this so far, he could have slotted seamlessly in a team like Manchester City.
