Opinion: Will Atalanta be a good move for Super Eagles winger?
Published: July 25, 2022With the transfer window going into the crunch part, Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has been linked with a summer transfer to Italian Serie A club Atalanta.
The Italian club are keen to reinforce their firepower and have identified the Young Lions 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup winner as an ideal candidate to bolster the attacking department.
The 24-year-old winger returned to his parent club RB Leipzig after spending the entirety of last season on loan at English side Leicester City but the Foxes have yet to push for his return to the club despite the initial loan ending with a good degree of success.
If a transfer to Atalanta does go through, allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at how Lookman would fit in and if the move will be a good move for the tricky winger.
Lookman is a tricky winger who is blessed with good pace, acceleration, technique and versatility. The winger is a bright option on the flanks and is versatile enough to play in any attacking position behind the striker.
The Nigerian also has the ability to play as a second striker if need be. His low centre of gravity is quite useful when unlocking tight defences.
Atalanta has changed from their gung-ho approach a few years ago. Gian Piero Gasperini prefers a 3-4-2-1 with the side midfielders and half-space wingers providing width and central combinations on the ball.
While the formation appears defensive, the approach is quite far from that. Lookman can thrive in this system because four positions are tailor-made for him.
He can slot in as any of the wide-midfielders or as a part of the 2-man support behind the striker.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, allnigeriasoccer.com thinks Atalanta would be a good fit for Lookman.
