Union Berlin give Awoniyi fitting farewell as Nottingham Forest are beaten in friendly
Published: July 23, 2022German Bundesliga side Union Berlin gave a fitting farewell to their former player Taiwo Awoniyi as they beat two-time European champions Nottingham Forest 1-0 in a friendly at Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday evening with 15,467 fans in attendance.
The Nigeria international completed a transfer to Nottingham Forest last month but could not say a proper goodbye to Union Berlin supporters because the league had ended.
Awoniyi returned to familiar surroundings today and was warmly received by his former teammates at Union Berlin and the fans of The Iron Ones.

However, it wasn't a dream return to Stadion An der Alten Försterei for Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest lost to their German opponents.
Nine minutes before the break, Siebatcheu emphatically turned the ball into the net for what proved to be the game-winning strike.
In the 40th minute, Awoniyi missed a huge chance to equalise for the Reds, firing wide after he was picked out by Brennan, before making way for Oli Hammond twenty five minutes into the second half.
In 65 appearances for Union Berlin before his return to the Premier League, Awoniyi netted 25 times and contributed nine assists.
