Sodje lauds Oshoala on CAF's POTY Award, rues WAFCON semifinal defeat to Morocco
Published: July 22, 2022
Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has heaped plaudits on Nigeria's Women's Africa Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala on her historic fifth prize which makes the most decorated African footballer.
Oshoala retained the crown she won last year when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) honoured the continent's best players, coaches and teams at the 2022 CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday, July 21.
Former West Brom, Charlton Athletic and Brentford central defender Sodje spoke with allnigeriasoccer.com.
"I received the good news of the Confederation of African Football awards on the two African stars especially Oshoala with great pride and satisfaction," Sodje who was capped by Nigeria said.
"There's no doubt that Asisat has done exploits in the past football season both for her club in Spain (Barcelona) and in the Nigerian national team.
"It is now on record that Asisat Oshoala did not only get the highest goal tally in her club but she was also very pivotal in the Nigerian women's national team's qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
"Oshoala's unfortunate injury - though not taking for granted the efforts of the present crop of players at the tournament definitely contributed to the loss of the Falcons in the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
"I sincerely rejoice and celebrate this very happy moment with our own Asisat Oshoala just as I implore her to keep working hard for more successes as there's still more for her to achieve and contribute to the football community in Nigeria and in the Africa continent.
"I believe that very truly that Oshoala is gradually becoming an African women's football legend. Once again congratulations to Asisat Oshoala and to the entire Nigerian football family," Sodje stated.
Senegal and Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane also retained his prize as the African Footballer of the Year in the men's category.
