WAFCON third place spot: Three things Super Falcons need to do ahead of Zambia clash
Published: July 22, 2022
One of the two key matches that remain in the African Women Cup Of Nations competition is the battle for the third-place position between the Nigerian Super Falcons and the Zambian Copper Queens.
This will be the Super Falcons' final game of their failed title defence after Randy Waldrum's women lost their semifinal game to hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout despite losing two players to red cards in the second half.
No doubt that the disappointment of crashing out of the tournament stems from the heroic performance the Falcons produced.
If they had lost the match in normal time or extra time with two men down, it probably won't be too painful for most fans as it was a monumental task.
While the pain lingers, there is no time to dwell on the past as a new challenge lies ahead in the form of Zambia. Ahead of the crunch clash, allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at three things the Super Falcons need to do.
Back to basics
While Randy Waldrum's tinkering with his set-up such as moving Ajibade to the flanks pushed the Super Falcons this far, there is a need to go back to the basics.
The most influential midfielders in Ajibade and Ayinde are absent so there will be no need to overcomplicate tactics.
Central defence conundrum
Despite her age and loss of pace, the importance of Onome Ebi cannot be overemphasized. It is confirmed that she will miss this game after sustaining an injury against Morocco.
While Ohale is quite capable of leading the defence, Ebi's replacement must be capable of holding down the fort.
While Ashleigh Plumptre is most likely to partner Ohale, a decision on whether a two or three centre-back formation still needs to be decided as the midfield is devoid of its two best players.
Heads up
Losing out on la Decima is no doubt disappointing, the Super Falcons need to keep their heads-up and give their all on the pitch as they have always done.
There is still something to play for in this tournament and a win would do great to lift the general disappointment.
