WAFCON Nigeria 4 Burundi 0 : Falcons set up mouth-watering clash vs Cameroon in quarterfinals
Published: July 10, 2022
Nigeria's Super Falcons on Sunday evening at the Moulay Hassan FUS Stadium in Rabat booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2022 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with a 4-0 win over Group C whipping girls, Burundi.
The win means that Nigeria will face the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarterfinals of the tournament after the central Africans finished in second place in Group B.
The Falcons coach Randy Waldrum made four changes to the side that defeated Botswana 2-0 with experienced campaigners like Francesca Ordega and Rita Chikwelu named on the bench.
The nine-time African champions were dominant in the first half and it paid handsomely with three goals in the space of four minutes by the Nigerians.
Rasheedat Ajibade was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Jeanine Irakoze with 24 minutes played.
The Atletico Madrid forward dusted herself up and expertly tucked the ball past the keeper who was subsequently substituted for injury.
Peace Efih soon doubled the lead when she scrambled the ball home from close range in the 28th minute.
Uchenna Kanu then made it a comfortable one for the Super Falcons when she finished with some style after a good cross from Rasheedat Ajibade at minute 29.
Ajibade had a goal disallowed for offside when she raced onto the ball with Ifeoma Onumonu but VAR checks ruled out her goal.
Just 22 seconds into the second half, Kanu grabbed a goal for the Falcons, guiding the ball into the net from an Ajibade cross for the fourth goal of the night.
Macleans Chinonyerem should have made it 5-0 but saw the ball gathered from her feet while trying to round the keeper.
